didn’t feel emotionally connected to the characters though which explains the 4 star rating.

Boy oh boy. Is two stars too generous? (Edit: yes it is and I'm changing it to 1,5 which still feels too generous...) This was in turn exciting to read, because the author is actually pretty good, and also excruciating to read because the characters were unbelievably self-absorbed, annoying and fake. The only character I kind of liked was Zoe, but she got like no time at all in the book. Why even include her if she wasn't important/going to get a good story arc? Well, it's for "diversity" of course. Tell me, why were all side characters part of a minority when the main characters were (mostly) straight and white??? It's just comes off as cheap, I'm sorry.

There’s so much to love about this book. Coco Mellors has a very captivating and intentional writing style; she felt very confident in exactly what she was aiming to say & never held back.
The centrepiece of this book is obviously the tempestuous relationship between Cleo and Frank; written in a dual POV. While the multiple POV format was effective in adding important depth and understanding to these characters, it also sometimes felt like it stifled the narrative’s natural development. I’m wondering whether this book may have been even better if it was told exclusively from Cleo’s perspective. Not to mention there was separate individual chapters for Quentin, Santiago, and Zoe, which again, while entertaining enough, didn’t really add anything substantial to the narrative. A pleasant distraction, but a distraction nonetheless.
I did really enjoy the thought you could tell Mellors put into making sure these characters didn’t fall too far into particular character archetypes - the old drunk, the tortured young artist- occasionally it would feel like they slipped into that territory, but they were always able to be rescued.
Reading back through, it does sound like I’m being too harsh on this book considering that I really enjoyed it. This book, much like Cleo & Frank, has flaws, but remains lovable & worthwhile regardless.

Ok. So I literally loved this book to death. The struggles every single character went through were so prevalent and just so needed. To have a character like Chloe that thinks she needs the love of a man (future me, but hopefully not) and just struggles with finding the love of others, is so important. These characters are never shown in a relatable manner. Then there were characters like Zoe who struggled with supporting herself and was just stuck in life, and then women like Eleanor who questioned what they had in life (one of my fav characters). Every flaw of a character was never hated, though every character was individually fucked up. It showed the beauty of life's struggles. That it's never just you going through it, but everyone else too. There were some characters that you simply just hated without a doubt like Anders and Quinten, but there was also characters that you went back and forth on hating. It is easy to love Chloe and Frank together from the start of the book. They were adorable. But then you have to combine their problems together, and sometimes, those problems are unfixable, even with someone to lean on. I disliked Zoe at the beginning of the book. She hated our main character and seemed like a spoiled rotten bitch. But then, you learn all the struggles she faces and the fact that she has no one on her side. You emphasize with her because of this. I think that's what a lot of this book is about. And don't even get me started on the writing. It had me stopping to think about all the beauty there is in the world. TOO GOOD TO DESCRIBE. I want to write like Coco Mellors. That's all I can say. This book is simply perfect. Life is not easy in the slightest, and this book encompasses it entirely.

I was worried at first that I wasn't going to like this as much as I expected but as I kept reading it really grew on me. I didn't like all the characters but was able to root for them because they felt so human

I read some other reviews and I have to say I completely dissagree with some of them.
Yes, even if it is about Cleo's and Frank's relationship, I think the other characters chapters add to the story.
I felt that the story unfolded pretty similarly to real life, where a relationship between two people is far more than that. (For example, whether you break up with your partner doesn't only evolve aroud your own feelings, it also depends on what your best friend will say about them, all your past relationships, how you grew up...)
I felt it was a fresh approach to the romance (?) genre, in how it subverted the almost sterile relationship between two people we've been reading about lately.
Even if some of the characters are less likable, I felt I still cared about them and wanted to know more about their story. I finished this book quite easily and couldn't get enough of it.
It's not a 4 star book because I felt that some stories were cut short, right when something big/ interesting would happen.
Also, I think Cleo's character was very stereotypical (in a good way) of the "detached woman in her 20's" trope that we've been seeing lately ...
Lastly, congrats to Coco, they said it took them 7 years to finish this book. It's such a magical but also ordinary story on human relations and how each one of us is so different and special. Much love 𓆩♡𓆪
