Hit me harder than I anticipated. Not because I’ve lived anything like the characters’ lives (I haven’t), but because it gets at how life can be an absolute chaotic mess, which I resonated with.

That said, the book goes deep into a lot of characters’ lives, only for the ending to feel kind of rushed. Like, it spends time setting up things like drug abuse and messy relationships, and then just… doesn’t follow through on all of them. Maybe that’s the point—life doesn’t tie itself up neatly, and not everyone gets a happy ending. I get it. But still, it left me wanting a little more.

I will say, though, it made me feel. Like, I was emotional at several points, and yes, I cried. It got to me.

Overall, it left me thoughtful but also a little conflicted, which I’m guessing was the goal.

I hate this book. It’s like fleabag but less smart. I dont think
its fair that Frank gets to live a happy changed life and we get stuck with not knowing what happens with Cleo. I think its a disservice to not give an inkling of hope that she can be better. I don’t think Frank was redeemed. Santiago was the only one with a happy ending. The emotional and physical violence thats described to happen only to Cleo was devastating. No one got what they deserved, it was deeply disturbing and unsatisfying.

Upon reflection i hate this book

An interesting people focused story. However  I found the emotionally low mood of the book, sometimes quite relentless.

This book was alright, I had heard so much rave about it that I had expected it to be a bit more. I didn't really fall in love with the characters that much and had a hard time following when the POV switched.

In this book, Coco Mellors has managed to indirectly or directly insult pretty much any gender, minority, country and condition that was ever mentioned in it. I have a big issues with authors who use ALL their characters in a story to punch down, because at that point I don't really feel like you're just writing an unlikable character.
On top of that, anyone with a minimum of social awareness in this book comes across as a preachy asshole, while literally everyone else doesn't miss a chance to roll their eyes in a 'these wokes, amirite???' way which I found really irksome. The LGBTQ+ is stereotypical and insulting, every single woman is 'not like other girls' and at some point hooks up with someone who is AT LEAST 20 years their senior, all characters speak in quippy one-liners and the writing in general is made up of terrible grammar, cringe takes and really clumsy dialogues.
Having said all that, I had a good time reading it, I consumed it like I consume terrible Reality TV shows, and the last 2 pages made me even tear up a bit.
Do with that what you will <3
