i took a long time to finish this book even though i liked it from the start.
all i wanted was to shake cleo’s shoulders and take her to therapy.
it is an exploration on the ripple effect a hasty decision can have on every other relationship we have.

This is one of my new favorite books of all time. I don’t say this lightly. Especially considering I almost gave up on it during the first chapter. I was frustrated, almost expecting the entire novel to center around two lovesick people with their ups and downs. And then, it wasn’t. Instead, Coco Mellors weaves a beautiful network of ugly relationships. Real relationships. The reader is entranced with the promise of this being a great romance, two people fighting the odds in spite of their differences. Then, the reader must face reality, hand in hand with the characters in a way that doesn’t end with death, despair, or trying again which, let me tell you, was a breath of FRESH AIR!!
Mellors asks really important questions throughout the novel; what if our lives weren’t defined by the people we love but how we love ourselves? What does it actually mean to be lonely? What does a healthy relationship actually look like? Do all endings have to be tied up in a perfect not or is a happy ending one where you do what you need to for the best of everyone involved?
Each character felt real, raw, and true. This book was captivating from start to end and I caught myself in moments of disgust and caring for just about everyone involved. Ignore the haters. Read this book.
