Everyone's a suspect and there are twists and turns aplenty. I very much enjoyed the Atticus Pünd mystery and, although I didn't know the whole solution, I was pretty certain I knew whodunnit by the middle of this novel...

Which is to say I knew the killer 90% into the Atticus Pünd story. I hate to say it but the big plot point of this book - the "real life" mystery that editor Susan Ryeland must solve - didn't do it for me quite as much. I think that's mainly because it was jarring. There was no other possible way to incorporate it but even so, I was pulled out of the one story and into another that I didn't really care about as much.

That said, I'll probably read the next book in the series at some point because the mystery stuff was great.

As many have said before this is a very smart concept- in that this is a book within a book. When book editor Susan receives the newest book from Alan Conway featuring his detective Atticus Piund, she sits down to read for the weekend. As the reader we read along with her and I really enjoyed the detective as looked into the possible accidental death of a housekeeper and then someone else. When it comes time for the reveal, the draft is missing the last several chapters. Susan is confused and tries to figure out what could have happened. Unfortunately, it is a bigger problem than she thought because Alan Conway has killed himself. As she looks further into what has happened she realizes that the Magpie Murders is mirroring Alan's death. As I said I really enjoyed the book within the book but I was less interested in the present day story. Do not get me wrong it wasnt bad it just wasnt as riveting to me. This was more of a 3.5 stars for me but I rounded up for 4 stars. I am thinking to pick up the next book in the series but I am not sure that I will be for me,

Enjoyed the book, but found it hard going. Interesting way of writing, a story in a story. But found some parts frustrating and it was a bit of a slog after time

Absolutely amazingly well written. An intriguing plot, stellar execution, and kept me invested to the very end. It was the very first whodunnit I’ve ever read, which was exciting. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I’m excited to read the rest of the books in the series. As a writer, there’s so many things that were externally well done that I’ll have to read it again to pick up on the writing style more.
Any fans of thrillers, compelling characters, and stories where nothing is quite what it seems, this is a book for you.
