Road to Fire

Maria Luis

3.97 AVERAGE

While I've known Maria Luis for some time now, this was the first book written by her I've had the opportunity to read.

OMG, when I say that she is one of the best authors I've read. The description and detail in which she tells her story is amazing. I loved every moment of it.

This story is full of steam, suspense and angst all wrapped in a gorgeous cover and you will want more and more.

Highly recommend and I can't wait for the next books in the trilogy!

Road to Fire was a 3 star read for me not because it was bad but because it was a little hard for me to get into personally. I continued the book to see where it would lead me and I’m not disappointed. I like the intensity between both main characters. Her two siblings really add a cute family banter and also showed the love they had for one another. I will read the second book eventually but it’s not something I’ll be itching to read right away.

4.4 stars

I wasn't sure what I was getting into when I saw the blurb for this book. All I knew was that this author wrote it and I was all in. I was right to jump into the story because it was riveting. It is very different than this author's previous books that I have read. For her first foray into a darker more political world, she did a great job.

The book starts a little slow, however, I think that was due to the fact that she needed to set up the world-building and premise of the story. This book felt very reminiscent of a mixture of James Bond/MI6 and Mission Impossible. Only without the gadgets. There was a lot of action and I mean A LOT. At times that was hard to follow because there are a lot of details here and things at play. In this case, it, both, helped and hindered the story for me. I struggled with who were they protecting and what side they were on. At times, the animosity even toward family was confusing as well.

A little over halfway into the story I was all aboard. I fell in love with these characters. Isla and Saxon were sublime. Truly. They were fire and ice and on two opposing sides. I loved the author pitted them the way that she did. Love shouldn't have a chance when being loyal is the life you are born into. Yet, the heart cannot be controlled in matters of love. Watching these two was painful and it was poignant.

The book sets up the next book very well and I look forward to that. I enjoyed reading how this idea came about and seeing where she intends to take the story next. It definitely made me think, "what if?" in regards to the idea of how things would have been different had a major historical event gone a different direction. These days, in this country, I would almost welcome that. I highly recommend the story to readers that like political intrigue, suspense, and a love that defies the odds.

I have to confess, I was very hesitant to read this book at first because it was labelled a 'dark romance' and my mind just conjured up things that might appear in this book that I just do not like to read. Having read Maria Luis before, I should have realized that would not be the case and taken the plunge when the book became available. It wasn't until I had joined her Facebook reader group that I saw her passion and her struggle with bringing the next book in the series to light that I bought the book and read it. Man, am I glad I did!

I loved this story so much!! This is the one of the types of stories that I love to read; where the hero doesn't think he's good enough and then the heroine comes in and shows him that he is! I love that they were two broken people who found acceptance in each other. Like I was warned, I did hate Maria for what she put them through and my heart broke for them but I trusted Maria had a plan. And then that ending happened!! Needless to say, I am anxiously awaiting Damien's story!!

Slow start, but builds to an interesting climax.

I saw a teaser for this book on tiktok and was immediately intrigued. But I was also intimidated by the “dark romance” label because I typically have to push my way through those. But THIS one was nothing like the few other DRs I’ve read. Yes the characters are morally grey…and maybe not law basing citizens but oh how I fell in love with them.
