I really enjoy books where all the ends are tied neatly in a bow at the end and this is one of those. Told from multiple perspectives but largely from a mother and her daughter's point of view, and deals with literature, substance abuse, loss and love. A beautiful read!

book club book. lots to discuss

Loved this book!

Here’s a book club read that I would likely have passed by otherwise. But I’m glad I didn’t, because it was wonderful! I was engaged in the writing and the story completely. While some of it was predictable, other parts were surprising and I was in tears by the end. I enjoyed that there was a active book club in the storyline, and I think it might be a great idea to spend a year reading everyone’s books that matter the most in my own club. I will definitely pick up an Ann Hood book again. It’s mainstream fiction, with writing that is light and which flows well from beginning to end. However, it still covers themes of loss, grief, relationships, and moving forward which can make it relatable to a reader.

DID NOT FINISH

This book didn't know what to be. There were three different storylines with three different tones throughout.

My first Ann Hood book. The ending definitely had an interesting twist and all the different books they discussed kept the book moving at a nice pace.

I'm not quite sure why I finished reading The Book That Matters Most. I'd made a resolution to put aside books that I was not enjoying and I knew that there wouldn't be a redeeming moment for me. There is a twist at the end, but the characters are poorly developed and unbelievable. The main character, Ava, is so dislikable that I couldn't root for her. Ann Hood can move the plot line forward but I'd say that's the only thing her writing has going.

I was going to give this book four stars, until I got to the end. It was one of those endings that's comprised of too many coincidences and things that are just too contrived. "I just can't" with endings like that!

I am a huge fan of books about books and of Ann Hood. So when Ann Hood wrote a book about books? YES PLEASE.

Ava's marriage has broken up and her older child, Maggie, is in Europe somewhere, for school and not keeping in touch with her family. So when she gets to join her friend Cate's exclusive book club, she's excited for the chance to get a little bit of an escape. The year's theme is "the book that mattered most." Each member picks the book that's impacted them the most. There are the ones you'd expect (To Kill a Mockingbird, Catcher in the Rye) and some surprises.

Which works out well, because Ava ALSO gets some surprises.

This book is my new favorite of hers and if you like family sagas, major surprises, books about books or amazing novels, check this out. Highly recommended.
