Thoroughly researched, but painfully stretched narration. I read Steven Saylor's other book, The Catalina's Riddle, and I absolutely loved it. In comparison, I should say, I'm disappointed with this book.

Very evocative and captivating  writing, the kind that makes you look up and realize that you read a hundred pages in one sitting. The characters, like the setting, feel very real and the mystery part is well executed. Definitely recommend it, even if you, like me, don't know anything about ancient Rome.

Weak dialogue, characterization. Read like Sherlock Holmes walks through my history notes. It's no "I Claudius".

I can understand why other people would really like this book, but I just couldn't get into it. Too many men, too much awfulness happening to women, and for a book that was meant to be pure escapism (for me) it didn't work.
