I wish I didn't wait 3-4 months(?) to review this book...I got this book for free when I went and saw Dan Brown give a lecture at Lincoln Center. I went to the lecture hoping to hear about the research behind his books..instead it was a talk on his popularity...a tour of his house and trying to convince the public to read his next book (Inferno)...to say I was disappointed is an understatement. The good part was the free book.
I felt the same tingly feeling I felt when waiting for a Harry Potter book...though NO, I am not saying this book is on the same level as a HP book!!!
I still find the writing lacking...and there are questions that are left unanswered...and a bit too much info that needs photos. I ended up turning to the Internet at the end of each chapter to look up the parts of Italy he was talking about. I would STILL love to hear about the research behind the books...and to understand better his process.
The book is about the different levels of hell...and overpopulation.
I found Dante's inferno part interesting...
Read if you are looking for a page turner and don't get annoyed with so-so writing. Read if you love Italy and like mysteries.

Not bad for a thriller but nothing I would rave about. It's certainly better than The Lost Symbol which I struggled to finish. Nevertheless, it would be a while before I'd try another Dan Brown book. I think there are far better talents out there.
medium-paced
Good quick read but it is pretty formulaic, especially for Brown. He continues to put the existence of humanity at stake in every novel and in every novel there is a nicely wrapped ending with a bow. It was a good read, but NOT my favorite.
2nd time
Reading this for the second time. I enjoyed the plot twists, thoughtful dilemmas, and historical references. Dan Brown is the master of those.

Entertaining, but by no means a literary masterpiece
I struggled through the first part of this book-- it seemed Brown was trying too hard or like he was trying to write a movie instead of a book. But it improved greatly as it progressed.
And I like that it dealt with a big idea, and HOW it dealt with it.
