The book was just very very average, and so completely different to the show. I wanted a lot more romance than had happened. It was okay, it wasn’t a bad book and it read quite easily but there was just nothing exceptional about it. No exceptional character, no exceptional quotes. Personally I liked the adaptation better, more seemed okay to happen. I do understand people liking Conrad more, but to be honest none of the boys were that special. I feel like everyone was more interesting in the show. It was fine.
In the kindest way possible, this book met my expectations. Just a little bit annoyed with belly all of the time but that goes with the genre and also her age.
i love the concept- the tumult of being a teenager. how everything that will one day be recognized as fleeting feels like forever- or at least the start of forever. and in some way it is.
still, belly gets on my nerves. perhaps like any teenage would at times? i’m torn between this book being good at capturing teenage emotions and this book having really static characters.
i read it at 14 and felt similarly tho (3 stars) so i’m going with static characters. i’ve watched the show since (am currently rereading so that i have fresh opinions for season 3) & honestly really love the show (minus belly’s attitude & choices).

I’m not changing my rating, because I stand by the 5 stars that 13/14 year old me gave this book. For her, this was a 5 star book. That said, ten or so years later, I would probably give it 3 stars. Despite the lower rating, I’m glad I read it again and will continue on to the second and third ASAP.
But in my opinion, the TV show is better (and I almost never say that). I think the story so far has more depth on the show. I think it does this by showing us glimpses into the characters’ stories that independent from Belly’s perceptions. I loved the changes made to story on the show to modernize it and how the women and girls in the story were written to be multifaceted in a way that they did not all necessarily get to be in the book.

This trilogy has light-hearted coming of age books that I found to be very easy & quick reads. There’s only 3-5 characters to focus on, so if you’re looking to really relax & turn off your brain a little, this is perfect.
It’s well-executed and certainly keeps you attention for three books straight- not an easy feat. I like that it has commentary on challenges that can apply to many phases of life, making it very warm and relatable for the reader.
I look forward to watching it soon & seeing the story from a filmmakers perspective.
