This is a fun summer read. It's atmospheric, fast-paced, and lighthearted.
Belly is 15 going on 16, and is always thinking about and craving for summer in Cousins, like she does every year. But this time it's different, bcs she's really growing into a young adult. Everyone notices, including Conrad and Jeremiah, who both end up falling for her. But Belly only has eyes for one brother. At least, for now.
Reading the book was like watching season 1 all over again, which I liked. I enjoyed reading about Belly's relationship with everyone, including Taylor and Cam Cameron. Gosh, I did not like Taylor at all. Cam Cameron is the one I was rooting for; not to be with Belly, but as a person I like him a lot. Steven is a typical brother to Belly but is simultaneously very protective of her. So are Conrad & Jeremiah, but it's different since they aren't Belly's real brothers. Also saw that people dislike that Belly's nickname is Belly. But it's different from the standard "Bella", so I appreciate that it's unique.
I looooved the yearning coming from Belly for Conrad. It was SO stinking cute. Also, I'm a sucker for friends to lovers, so there's that. Although Conrad was annoying, we see why in the end, and it's understandable why he acts the way he did. Jeremiah is a jokester who likes to see everyone happy and likes making people smile, whereas Conrad is calmer and more to himself. They both have different ways of expressing their emotions. Conrad's come out as harsh/being an a-hole in this book, and Jeremiah seems like the one who cheers people up.
All in all, it was a fun read, but the writing was a bit too juvenile for me: "He went to the kitchen. He grabbed a soda can. He sat down and opened the soda can." Other than that, I'm looking forward to seeing what the next book will be. But if it wasn't for the show, I don't think I would've want to read the other books.

Generally inoffensive and fun, with a pacing and style in which the author has obvious skill. tSITP is for a much younger teen audience (13-15) than I had guessed from the show (which, by the way, is a lot more entertaining than the book) and even though the characters are a little insufferable they're almost cutely so. Every point of conflict stays surface level, however, and Han offers kind of a lazy attempt to soften the gender roles and not so good self-image problems extant in this adolescent holiday haven. I hope young people don't find any of this actually aspirational, but it's a harmless enough fluffy read and I'd offer it to anyone with an interest in petty teen theatrics.

It's very rare that I prefer a show over a book, but honestly The Summer I Turned Pretty is one of those cases. Everyone in this book is just... insufferable. Probably realistic, because teenagers are generally awful s but still, it grated on me.
Steven came across as a total arsehole, though I think some of that was just big brother/little sister dynamics filtered through Belly's POV. Suzanna's constant hero-worship felt over the top, and Belly endlessly comparing her mum to her was frustrating.
The only one I really enjoyed was CamCameron - I am firmly Team Cam.
I don't think l'll continue the books series, but l'll happily stick to loving the show instead.
If I was 15 years old I probably would have loved it but I'm a bit too old for it now.
