I found it difficult to fall in love with the characters

What a BEAUTIFUL hidden gem this book was! It captured my heart and had me on the edge of my seat - I could not put this down!

Grateful to this book for getting me out of my 2021 major book slump with its hauntingly beautiful story and characters!

I received an eArc of this book from Books Forward Friends on Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book was such a beautiful and heart breaking story! It's based off of the Phantom of the Opera. Kind of like a gender bend version, but also with some really interesting magic thrown in. I've honestly never read a book quite like this one.

The main character is an outcast because of what she was born as. She lives hiding in the dark and staying away from all but the man who saved her life as a baby. Then, one day, she hears this beautiful tenor voice singing and becomes entranced.

The story is filled with romance, loss, adventure, mystery, and magic. I would recommend anyone who loves any of these to give it a chance! I also don't recall a ton of curse words, if any. Definitely an amazing read!!

I was really excited about this one, since it’s a Phantom of the Opera retelling, but ultimately it didn’t wow me. It definitely felt more “inspired” by Phantom than an actual retelling. Emeric’s character was adorable and sweet. Seeing hints of darkness in Isda’s character would grab my attention when it was waning, but ultimately I wanted more of an anti-hero/villainous character from someone who’s supposed to be a gender-bent Phantom. I think a lot of readers will find the ending unsatisfying as well.

This is a Phantom of the Opera meets Rapunzelkind of story–Now, tell me how can I not pick this book up?

As a fan of musicals, I sometimes wonder what it would be like to read a book that's like a musical...and this book gave me it. I know, I know, it could've been more powerful if it weren't so YA. But it's a coming of age story ya'll, so I can't really blame. But that ENDING though! I feel like the author started this with the ending already planned and I could've been more...I guess, satisfied is the word?
I really thought I wouldn't cry, yet hell I did.

A quick question
SpoilerWouldn't it be just as hard or maybe even harder for Emeric if Isda left him with his unstable sister? wouldn't they be in hiding still? I really need this answered cuz that bit was confusing.
