Shades of Constantine and Fallen. An enjoyable take on the occult detective. Will definitely be tuning in for number two.
I loved the Strain series, so I expected to enjoy this. It was meh. Part of the problem for me was I didn’t like Hugo Blackwood. The other part was I listened to the audiobook (received free from NetGalley) and it kept stopping after almost every chapter. It kept me frustrated, when I was already frustrated with one of the characters. The narrator was enjoyable.

The premise was fun, and I enjoyed the beginning a lot. There just seemed to be a lot of sub-plots that didn't seem to connect very well. The writing tended to be rushed or too convenient at times. All-in-all, I was not too disappointed and not too impressed.
An entertaining novel. The authors neatly avoided the trite and over-done "end of the world/apocalypse" scenario, though it was eluded to. Some good writing, with interesting turns-of-phrase and insightful observations. Would probably make a good film.
This is my first foray into the worlds of Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, although the Strain series is waiting on my bookshelf. While I did enjoy this book, the pace is very slow, and it really was not as intense as I hoped it would be. It's obviously a set up for a series, so I will reserve final judgement until after I read the second book.
**Trigger warning for some violent murder scenes that involve children**. The book was a fairly quick read and I enjoyed the plot of the story overall. I've never really had a bad experience with Del Toro's stories or movies.. I am, however, sensitive to some of the subject matter so some of the death scenes made me wince a bit, hence the three stars.

Would have preferred that the story revolved around Solomon, I did not care for Odessa.
