I decided to listen to this on a whim and ended up enjoying it a lot. A mixture of thriller, horror & paranormal dealing with the occult and demonic possession and covering three separate timelines, I found this book interesting and I equally found the character of the occult detective John Blackwood intriguing.

Brittany Pressley does a great job with the narration. Her voice is pleasant and clear and she reads the book at a nice pace that made it easy for me to understand what was going on.

Chuck Hogan, who has co-authored this book with Guillermo Del Toro, is a new to me author but now I will be checking out his backlist. It seems he and Guillermo Del Toro have co-written several other books as well.

It's kind of a paranormal thriller set in a world where magic exists but people isn't aware of it on a normal basis. An FBI agent stumbles upon a case when she has to fire to another agent acting weirdly in a crime scene.
It's a nice set up of a story but it does feel a bit introductory. I need the second installment as of now! Is it out yet?

Guillermo Del Toro is one of my favorite people, but his novels are just not my thing. I’ve never been a fan of occult-heavy horror, so this may just not be for me. This is clearly the beginning of a series, so I may not give up on it entirely since there are some interesting ideas in there.
