This was my first audiobook. I received it for free via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I have to say that I did not enjoy it that much. It had a decent premise with the investigations into the hollow ones, which is why I continued reading to find out what happens. I wasn't able to connect with the main character. It seems like she was an afterthought to the plotline.
It seemed disconnected. And maybe that is because it was an audiobook or perhaps becuase there were two authors. The chronology was very disjointed and it took me out of the story. I would have enjoyed the different storylines if they would have been told in different parts and not all together. This is more for someone who enjoys the jumps to different times that disrupt the present plotline.
I would not recommend this book to another reader and do not plan on reading any more in the series.

Nice premise and characters.

Unfortunately, the story doesn't seem to deliver on its promise.

Since it is the start of a series, I'm willing to give it a chance and see how things progress in the next installment.

This book's given me the most terrifying nightmare I have ever had. Thanks xx

THIS IS NOT A HORROR

i am so mad

This is a crime book with a supernatural element. Not scary in anyway, shape or form.

There's very few points in the book where I was actually vaguely interested in what was happening. The synopsis sounded so good so I'm super mad it didn't deliver on what I expected.

Also the sterotypical british character had me cringe.

Aún me habría durado menos

FBI agent Odessa Hardwicke and her partner Walt Leppo are in the process of trying to apprehend a murderer who just went on a rampage, only to have Walt attempt to harm the only remaining survivor... the murderer's young daughter. Odessa shoots him in self-defense, and as she watches her partner go down, she smells a burning smell and sees a shadow rise from his body. As she has her gun taken away and is put on desk duty, one of her first assignments is to gather up the belongings of a retired agent and take them to him. When she gets there, he not only knows all about her case, but he tells her he experienced something eerily similar when he was first starting out. He introduces her to John Silence Esq., someone or something, who has been alive for centuries, who exists solely to fight the evil entities that Odessa witnessed.....they are called "the hollow ones".
I loved this book. I was a huge fan of "The Strain" series, and I thought this was just as good in it's own way. It had a great "creep factor" going for it, and a great storyline. If you are a fan of Stephen King and Dean Koontz, then I think you will enjoy this.

Odessa Hardwicke is an FBI rookie who hasn't seen too much action. All that changes in the blink of an eye one night as she's forced to shoot her partner in self-defense after he becomes inexplicably violent at the scene of a crime they're investigating. While she keeps replaying that night over and over, it's not the actual shooting that's bothering her but rather the shadowy figure she saw leaving her partner's body after he died. Completely shaken by the incident, Odessa is more than happy to be stuck on desk duty pending an internal investigation and takes up an assignment of clearing out the office of a retired officer. In doing so, Odessa stumbles upon some evidence that proves the shadow she saw might not have been her imagination at all and leads her to a mysterious man who claims to have been alive for centuries and who just might be her only hope in saving humanity from a terrible evil.

The premise of this sounded very The X-Files-ish and I was intrigued. While all those elements may have been present, it didn't feel fully formed. Was is action-packed? For sure. Was it exciting? Yeah, a bit. Did it keep my attention? Absolutely. I loved the notion of these Hollow Ones being around for centuries wreaking havoc and this shadowy man sort of overseeing that they don't destroy the whole world. The only thing that fell slightly short for me was the characters themselves. Odessa was fine, and I think Blackwood was interesting, but neither one felt very real to me. I think if they were fleshed out a tiny bit more, I could've connected and been more invested in what happens to them. Characters aside, the plot was still interesting and I'd recommend if you're a fan of possession movies like The Thing or the show Supernatural.
