Cut to Vengeful in which things get even darker. I don’t even know if I would call any of what happens morally grey because there does not seem to be a character left without blood on their hands. For a series called Villains, this is the ultimate tentative conclusion…because the story hasn’t actually ended there, the third book, Victorious, is coming! Do we trust anything that gave us closure in the end of Vengeful? I wouldn’t trust these characters as far as I could throw them, and I can’t throw them because they’re incorporeal!

5 stars!

It’s been days since I finished this book and I still don’t know how to adequately sum it up. The Villians Verse is closely tied with Darker Shades for my favorite of Schwab’s universes. The tension grips the reader relentlessly, and though there are many POVs and timeline shifts, I never felt lost. Learning Eli’s backstory brings so much sympathy to his character, his faith and guilt and implied neurodivergence all ring so true.

A great follow up to Vicious. More time with these intriguing characters and their dark passions. I truly did not know how the clash between Victor and Eli was going to end.
