4.5. Not quite as good as the first. Timeline was a little harder to follow in the first 1/2 or so.

Jesus christ i love this book. i cant seem to get enough of the villains series and the characters in it. this was a rollercoaster and i adored it. whilst still reading the first book, i already ordered the second, and i am so glad that this was JUST AS GOOD as the first one, if not better (but idk bc i loved both so much). the characters are EXTRAORDINARY ;). in the first book, i really enjoyed all characters, especially loving victor vale bc duh. but i wasn’t that fond of eli because he was trying to kill my man. of course i still liked his character because it was complex and had a lot of layers, and a backstory that we got to see in this book WHICH WAS SO ADDICTIVE AND I LOVEEEEED, but he wasn’t my favorite. HOWEVER. In this book, after receiving his backstory, and more of his thoughts and opinions, i couldn’t help but love him. and well, when he died, it felt like my heart was ripped out of my chest. BUT - i did think that victor was dying in this book, when him and eli were fighting (canr believe i underestimated vic and syd), so eli instead of victor was somewhat of a mercy to my heart. victor was obviously victor and therefore obviously AMAZING, and stole the show and my heart, as predicted. this was just phenomenal. the women in this book were also amazing, and some of marcella’s quotes had me SCREAMING AT THE EMPOWERMENT!!! I cannot wait for the next book, this is definitely in my all time top favorites, along w vicious. AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING.

Ok, I loved this one a lot more than book one. Something just clicked for me majorly. The pacing was nice and quick, I felt the characters were a lot stronger and more of a focus point and the book was just generally gritty and tense all throughout.

Sydney is still my favourite character, I loved seeing her moral struggle here, we got to see a lot of her emotions play out in ways that I wasn’t expecting and although at times I was worried about her, questioning her actions, I still understood everything she was doing. The push pull between loyalty was really interesting to explore.

The world expended to an extra layer in Vengeful with even more EO’s and powers and it made for some exciting chapters. The story really gripped me through every turn and bend.

I’m so glad I gave this series another chance because although I enjoyed Vicious, I could take it or leave it, it just didn’t quite hit the mark for me. But Vengeful really changed things, I had so much fun reading it. I am thrilled to learn that there are plans for a third book, can’t wait to see what Schwab comes up with!

Excellent once again. I feel like this was more heavily inspired by Interview with the Vampire than Bury our Bones in the Midnight Soil was, given whatever was going on with Victor, Mitch and Sydney. I think we could have benefited from maybe fewer characters or more time because I feel like Sydney in particular got shafted in this one and we could have done more with her character arc, although the development of Eli and Victor in this book was even better than in the first one. The
power suppressant
stuff also definitely could have made a third book on its own, especially because I feel like the driving force of Eli and Victor's rivalry only paid off in the last like...15% of the book and there was so much more that could have happened with both of these things. I would still love a third book and there is definitely room for one given the state of things at the end of this book (I have a couple of ideas for plot beats around Sydney already, namely
1. bringing back Eli as a way to figure out where Victor went (although maybe this is just wishful thinking...I just can't imagine a book without the two of them to oppose each other but who knows) 2. since people's powers seem to get stronger over time, I'd love for her to develop the ability to have some measure of control over the beings she's brought back, more than just feeling where they are, specifically because this would make Victor lose his entire mind 3. something to do with confronting June since that's still VERY unresolved.)
Anyway. In conclusion no one is doing it like Victor Vale.

MY SHAYLAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😭😭😭😭
My pookie can't be dead. Liking Cardale is toxic, but in my opinion, almost everyone in this book is morally grey.

This book is a combination of slow-moving because it's all leading to one specific event, so we spend a lot of time with the character doing various schengaians.

But because there are SO MANY PEOPLE to keep track of and the chapters are uber short, it seems very fast paced.

I think for this book, you make the argument that this book didn't need to exist, and for that, I see your point, and you're right. The first book concluded well enough to where a second one wasn't necessary; HOWEVER, I feel like this is another case of "A Good Girl's Guide to Murder", the first book had a nice conclusion, but I love the characters so much that I didn't care if the author wanted to milk it out for a bit, NOPE!

Now, I will admit I didn't like this as much as the first one. The middle part, from like 200-300 page mark, slogged for me, and there were so many time skips that I was scared to feel overwhelmed. Lots os new people, some I liked (Marcella, Johnathon, Dominic) and some I could do without (the doctor, June). Overall, I liked it, but I felt like certain plots were either underdeveloped or felt underwhelming by the time the book ended.
Marcella's death was pretty underwhelming. Like she just got crushed by a building. The doctor guy is only here for 5% of the novel and yet has this big discovery of being able to suppress the EOs' abilities, but then dies like an hour later anyway. Sydney's plotline was a lackluster. She spent all that time trying to revive her sister, just to be like "nah" in the end. And also, June's weird obsession with Sydney makes no sense. She spent all this time making her all aloof and mysterious, so she didn't really have good characterization in my opinion. Her motivations just didn't make much sense. I loved Marcella. Honestly, she scratches the dark romance itch I have in my brain sometimes. Lowkey if V.E. Schwab wrote a dark romance, I wouldn't be mad.😅
