Took me a long time to get through the book. I found that some parts of it dragged for the 50% of it, and I found the 70-80% enjoyable more. I didn't also particularly care for Marcella and June's characters although they did spice the plot up a bit.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh can there pleeaaase be more?!?! Also, I am totes going and buying these now, must own.

It took me a surprisingly long time to get through this book.
Definitely did not enjoy it as much as the first one. It felt very anti-climatic, plot was thin, and I did not care about what happened to any of the main characters.

Vengeful

Eli is a simple case of nature vs nurture and how that affects the psyche of a young child. Also how religious beliefs, mental illness, and abuse gets mashed together and written off as a strict hand and a rigorous path in America. Trying to hold yourself together in some semblance of civility to save face your entire life to please others or to keep others away is so fucking common for the ones who survive that life. And that’s exactly what Eli did and the minute he released the smiles and pretty words wouldn’t cut it anymore he took a page out his father book and turn to God and repeated the cycle.
Masking is either a learned behavior or a studied one. Constructing that perfect tone,or smile,or mannerisms is much harder than people think. But for Eli it was a necessity for survival, and when it’s all you know to fall back on masking will either crumble you at some point or it will simple be habit. Like make your bed in the morning or brushing your teeth. But being able to dissect emotions like Eli can and reacting outwardly with the socially correct response was just that. Habit,a well hon tool in his arsenal to manipulate the world around him. Which of course is where the psychopathic tendencies lie. But the chokehold religion had on him truly seems compulsory or something that was so beaten into him that saw it in everything therefore nothing was ever separate from it. Like the rationalization of medicine also being religious simple before “god created all men.” Another factor is that Eli is smart, which is kinda an understatement, to a point where all the things his brain could do for him emotionally and mentally coil together to make the monster him became. He could play god easily and without thought because he didn’t have the guilt and any small sense of pleasure he got from the kills he would immediately rationalize it back to god and the past feeling of killing his father. A bad man washed away,a weight lifted which extrapolated to an unnatural EO dead innocents saved. Making him the second coming or a shepherd culling the sheep in wolves clothing. Eli finally being killed it this book shocked me truly but I knew Victor or Sydney would find a way a some point even if it was circumstantial. But god he was an intriguing character.

Marcella on the other hand wasn’t prepared enough for the power she took unfortunately. Putting aside her want for Sydney, I actually really like her and her revenge was so sweet.

Dominic always the good soldier went out the way I figured he would to be honest. Victor held his pain back and he fell in line to the very end.

Sydney on the other hand, was a surprise in this book. I feel she really grew into herself to an extent she is still way to attached to Victor but that’s to be expected. Her powers evolved greatly and I think she will be able to do much more later if she masters it more. I’m very happy she could bring Dol back again lol Schwab needs to stop killing him off.

Victor is wasting away at this point and he truly isn’t better than Eli anymore. Killing everyone that wasn’t useful to him really cuts down how likable I found his character. See how his brain works was fascinating though. I’m happy he finally left Mitch and Syd before he got them killed but it won’t stick I’m pretty sure.

Junes character was a very nice new perspective but I’m still confused what happened to her and why she so important. Also why she got hooked onto Syd so quickly. But her abilities are very interesting. The fact that she couldn’t die unless it was her face being shot at is mind blowing.

This series is truly one of my top 5 I’ve ever read. It’s completely original and the world is so captivating. Schwab’s written is perfect and her character building is paced so well. I’m going to continue reading the rest of her books ever published lol.
