Like an adventure as big as Luca and an atmosphere as descriptive as Encanto, this could be your next Disney movie - an interesting heroine, a splash of unusual magic, a bird companion, a talking doll.... throw in a quinceanera and you have a rich adventure story. Beautiful.

I listened to Solimar with Trent, and it ended up being much more of an adventure than I realized it was going to be. Solimar becomes the only hope for her kingdom, so is forced to action which leads to an adventure unlike anything she’s been on. Ryan’s writing is so lyrical and descriptive, I felt like I was with Solimar as she journeyed through jungles, rivers, and mountains to save the day.

I love all of Pam Muñoz Ryan’s books! As I read this new one I couldn’t help but imagine a whole book unit on it! We could raise butterflies, study their life cycle, discuss the current deforestation and pesticides that are threatening them, investigate ways they can be helped, all while reading a beautiful adventure that features a strong and brave girl coming of age and earning respect and a voice in her Kingdom. What a fun story!

A smoothly moving plot that manages to include magical butterflies, a witch, a coup, rapids and deep caves, a hostage situation, and yet the reader is delivered through each moment without too much stress.

An enjoyable, fun journey.
