DNF. Only made it through the first quarter of this book. For 100 pages readers get an emotional recap of the last novel. Nothing else happens. No idea how someone could think this could stand on its own. The characters are all so stiff and unrealistic. I hated this.

typical scarpetta mystery, with a werewolf of a twist.
As usual I sped through this book. It is what they term a page turner. This episode has momentous changes in store for Dr Scarpetta. Wesley Benton is a major character, but so far he's still dead. Lucy still flies, Marino's still fat, and all of the important characters other than Benton are still alive. I've begun buying the books sooner so I don't run out of reading material waiting for the next installment to be delivered.
so it goes. Fantastical, complicated, but reliably engaging. The weather abides.

I'm not even leaving star reviews on these anymore because it's not fair to others. The only reason I'm still reading these is because:
1. I love Marino
2. I am a masochist
3. I've made it through 40+ Sandford novels purely on spite, and now 11 of these. I have to finish the series now.
This one is a continuation of the bad guy in the last novel...but almost entirely through investigation on Scarpetta - and all of her doubts and loss and crying and anger, etc. Only "things happening" is about 20 pages long. I didn't feel like this book had any actual plot, and it feels like an extended ramp from the previous book to the next one, rather than a standalone.
Why am I doing this to myself.
On to the next one.

75% of this was probably the weakest Scarpetta novel I’ve read but then the ending was 😱🤯🤬🫣 so I’ve given it a 3
I think it could have been condensed down a little, or even merged with black notice.
It was very slow for most of it but all the same I still wanted to keep reading.
