The Screwtape Letters

C.S. Lewis

4.12 AVERAGE

Positively excellent, stunningly prescient. The Audible narration was superb; this is a book that is especially enjoyable when read aloud (and by someone who can do that borderline-ridiculous old-school "posh" British accent). This classic work of Christian satire will cut you a thousand times, and I think we all see some vision of ourselves mirrored in Wormwood's "patient." Though I read this in the pre-Lent season of the church year this go-around, I may make this a Lenten read in the future. C.S. Lewis has put the razor-sharp sword of the Law into the mouth of a devil, with hilarious—and harrowing—effect.

Read before going to see the play (which was excellent!). It's a great story from q totally different perspective but in true Lewis fashion, full of deep truths that make you really think!

★x4 | (A-) 93% | AGES 16+ | Truly thought provoking. Definitely would recommend, but mainly for older teens and up because of the religious and political values it discusses. I don’t think a 12 year old would find it interesting at all. So definitely make sure your child is mature enough. There is talks of s*x and other mature content so please beware!
For those of you who don’t know what this is about. “It’s about a man named Screwtape who writes to his nephew about Christian theological issues, especially those with temptation and how to resist it.” That’s just the top layer. But there is so much more to this. Screwtape is a demon, and his nephew Wormwood, a junior tempter, is being trained to corrupt his “Patient.” “The Patient” is any ordinary man who can be easily tempted into doing sinful things. This is unique perspective on our sinful nature and who we allow to control it. C.S. Lewis writes in a satirical form and uses it to show us who the real enemy is.
This is an incredible work of art and I’ve never read any book like it before. Highly rec.!
