Wow. This should be required reading for our younger generations. So many of them have no idea what these men endured for us. If only we could raise a generation of individuals like "The Old Breed", there might be hope.

A poignant and insightful memoir of one Marine's experience in World War II in the Pacific. Sledge did a memorable job of capturing the heartbreak and camaraderie he experienced, and any young person who is considering military service (or any politician considering getting into a war) should read it first; it is sometimes necessary but not to be entered into lightly (speaking as a retired Marine).

With the Old Breed does a great job of conveying the relentlessness of the Pacific campaign. Grimy and dirty and bloody.

dark sad tense fast-paced

Fascinating if horrifying first hand account of the pacific theater of WW2 with the marines. Covers two major battles towards the end of the war and the absolutely crazy conditions found as they fought for every inch of ground.

The account is extremely detailed with notes take from a journal the author kept inside a Bible. He doesn’t hold much back from the horror of war.
