Quick read that I somehow simultaneously enjoyed and found myself questioning why I was reading it. Medical resident in witness protection program escaping mob who killed grandparents who posed as Shoah survivors. Recommend for readers willing to suspend their disbelief and who aren't adverse to a bit of gore.
This book is an absolute buzzkillington. I picked up this book assuming I was getting an action packed story and instead I get a book written by an intern who fills the need to inform everybody how much he's learned in the medical field. Good for you, you know more about hospitals than J.D., Turk, Dr.Cox and Creepy Janitor combined. If I wanted medical facts I would've just picked up a copy of Grey's Anatomy. I seriously cannot stress enough how every paragraph of this book is like the medical version of the Buzzkillington character from Family Guy
You know that you've just encountered a rare jewel of a novel when the first scene describes a fight between a rat and a pigeon over a small piece of food. Beat the Reaper is a great novel about a doctor in WitSec whose past catches up with him. That's all you need to know. Forget about symbolism or any other literary devices, just enjoy.
Peter Brown is an intern at a hospital in Manhattan. He never gets any sleep and uses uppers to keep himself awake. He has a new patient Nicholas LoBrutto, aka Eddy Squillante. Eddy thinks that Dr. Brown is actually Pietro "Bearclaw" Brnwa. If he is than he is in trouble. Bearclaw Brnwa was a hitman for the mob and someone still wants him dead. At times the book is gory and funny. Though the ending was very hard for a squeamish person to read I still loved the book.
Really good. Super funny too. Very interesting storyline and voice. I liked how it jumped between present and past, plus I learned a lot about both the human body and the mafia from this book

A clever formula of a testosterone mystery mixed with a critique of our hospital system equals a very entertaining read that left me wanting more.
What a scary, weird little book, like if Chuck Palahniuk wrote for Grey's Anatomy. The kind of book that makes you think there is nothing good in the world, but says it so wonderfully that you have to pay attention. Also, I never want to go in a hospital ever, ever again. Ever.
