This took me forever to get through but I think that’s just a me thing.
I thought it was good and compelling overall I just personally lost interest but again, that’s on me

I thoroughly enjoyed this! There was a small bit at the end -- why didn't Rig shoot Umbra as soon as Daara was handed over?! -- but other than that, yum. A quick, easy read, high stakes, lots of handwavey science and space stuff, characters tortured by their pasts, satisfying strangers-to-enemies-to-friends. I would have liked more exploration of the various species (beyond what they looked like) and a real conversation between Rig and Ginka towards the end, something to show that/if Ginka's perspective on her faction/Windshadow had changed .
It's not really in the same league, but I found myself thinking that this was close to what I was expecting/hoping for when I picked up Gideon the Ninth. I did enjoy that (and it is objectively "better") but it was ... a bit too heavy. Not something I could read anytime. Bluebird was far more approachable but still satisfying.

It's a very fun book with a lot of action. I liked the political commentary and the protagonist's views about the different governments which are just as evil as each other and considers issues such as no ethical consumption under capitalism basically. Sometimes the main character is extremely slow to catch on to new relevations which I think is a weakness of the writing. But I forgave it because it was a fun, blockbuster-y read.
