When Rig escapes off-world with crucial weapons tech, it triggers a series of events that find her fighting for her family and freedom.

Based on the blurb, I had hoped to love Bluebird. Lesbian gunslingers? Spies in space? Rig saving her sister? Sign me up! Unfortunately, while the book is filled with potential, for me it didn't quite live up to that potential. It felt to me as though there were a few missed opportunities e.g. more development with the romantic pairing or more threat from the spy operatives. My overall feeling is one of being overwhelmed by names, factions, codenames, and concepts, none of which were developed with enough time or space for me to feel settled in to the story. While I thought the story built up to an excellent and exciting finale, I struggled to care about any of the characters, and because the novel is quite long, that meant it often felt quite difficult to keep wading through.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a free eARC of Bluebird. These opinions are my own.

What a thoroughly enjoyable, entertaining, fast-paced ride! This book may not have been perfect in every sense, but I don't care. It was a definite page-turner, I loved the characters, the dialogue, the mishmash but completely easy-to-get combination of so many (albeit many pre-existing) ideas and tropes that made up this book! Seriously like a dozen movies / TV series / other books came to mind, but not in a weird or bad way at all, quite the opposite! Ahhhh a sapphic space opera with holding-your-breath-action, cool tech, intriguing worlds and cultures and politics and what-not, aaaaaaaaaaa soo my jam! ✨✨✨

After reading the synopsis, this book is exactly what you'd expect it to be.

No rating for this; it's just not for me. My other GR friends enjoyed it though, so please give it a try if it sounds appealing!

The sister relationship made me sad and a lot of the twists were predictable. Gingka was nice, but the rest was slow and unremarkable.

Fun and sweet with good bones to hold it up. Loved Rig, great mix of goofy and competent. I liked that she was in a pre existing relationship, I don't find a lot of stories where two women who love each other get the chance to just kick ass and be together, it's usually about how they first fall in love. Some of the world building details felt implausible or unexplained but it didn't take away from the story tbh. Really the kind of book I wanted to hear after having finished some darker material just before. Would gladly read a sequel.
