Story seems like it could be interesting to follow. A bit disappointed in the quality of the art inside, but it's not bad. Just not a fan of the flat colors and intense inking.

Loved the cover art like crazy, wanted to like the book. So far, feels like super typical fantasy fare, and sped through too many character introductions to engage.

This first issue sets up an awesome cast of characters. I also love the ambiance established: the creators use silence in a powerful way. There is also little text but the text used is purposeful. I'm impressed!

I love the interesting perspectives we are getting in each panel (or lack of panel). The art is fantastic, as is the color pallet. The character design is much messier inside than it is on the covers, but this sketchy style matches the hasty, unclear, atmosphere. There seems to be a daemon, is it a djinn?

I do believe that this single issue is a spin-off from the first two issues of 8house which Marian Churchland worked on with Brandon Graham and that's the main reason I picked this up because it has very similar vibes and magic. The artwork in this issue is done by Sloan Leong who, whilst she clearly has talent, is not quite as wonderful as Churchland for blending and tone. I do like a lot of the artwork still, but I think that it is a little too bold and bright in some panels and I would have liked a little more of a soft design that allowed you to get more drawn into the story.

Speaking about the story, so far all we know is that there's a few different characters who are all being introduced to us and there's clearly some political issues which are currently happening. We see the King and his son and daughter as they chat, and we also get to see some of the lower class citizens going about their day to day lives. There are spooky rituals and creepy characters, and the storyline is easy to follow, but building. I get the feeling that this could blossom into something pretty entertaining and I will certainly keep my eyes peeled to see if I can find the next issue. Hopefully it's a series which will get better as it goes.

Overall it's a good beginning, but it's exactly that, just a beginning. I do think we have some interesting rune magics and some etherial, spooky spirits, but equally it's nothing too original just yet. It's certainly likeable though, we'll see where it goes! 3*s overall
