I know why I kept reading this series to the end: It has all the tropes I crave in an audio book while at work and I just kept waiting for them to live up to their full potential.

Lia Mara's subjects struggle with her new take on leadership, with growing distrust at the magic that seems to surround her, while her sister chafes a bit under the restraints she's under. Back in Emberfall, Harper and Rhen are not faring much better. Their subjects are deeply distrustful, and Harper's assistance getting Grey out make her a traitor in the eyes of some. Meanwhile, Lillith keeps tugging at everyone's strings...
For anyone who lost a little heart with the last book, I think you'll find that there's quite a turnaround here, so I felt it deserved some credit for that, especially with Harper and Rhen taking such hits in the last book. Warrior Harper makes a return while Lia Mara finds herself having to learn how to distinguish being kind with being a doormat. Rhen, with a bit of a bumpy start, claws his way back to redemption.
There definitely feels like there's still more to go with this story--paths we haven't explored, but dear Lord, can we finally get rid of Lillith once and for all? How many times has she come back from certain death, now?

I liked this one, probably better than the 2nd but not as much as the 1st. I felt like not a lot happened...but I still loved reading it, such a fun series.
