Walton remakes the pastoral (the name "Corydon" crops up here) by rooting it in extremely detailed information on say, "sniggling" (eel fishery), or mutilating various insects for use as bait, or what herbs to use in cooking chubs. Amid this tidal wave of information, the basic functions of the pastoral remain very much in play: the exchange of songs, the environmental evocations, the dream of freedom from toil, the sly reflection on the state of the society. While it makes for very weird reading, this symbiosis of pedantry and poetry makes its idylls feel uniquely present.
