Case studies and stories from dozens of people. There were couples and single people.
It started with exploring how we choose homes that remind us of happy places in childhood. Kids like to have a space (usually outdoors) that they can change and customize. If an adult turns it into a formal fancy treehouse, they lose interest. They want it to be ramshackle and changeable.
One chapter explored how couples deal with different goals. E.g. one person wants to live in the country where it's quiet and isolated, and another loves the bustle of the big city.
The book covered many stories of loss after divorce or death of their spouse. The home has many memories. But moving away too abruptly was also too sharp of a transition. Bringing some mementos made it better.
Finally it explored how home is our sanctuary but we need to go on the hero's journey to learn more about ourselves. It's a journey to a new location but we return home with a deeper understanding of ourselves.

An interesting and insightful read, though it is written with an American audience in mind. I had a jarring moment when I saw a study by Israelis, but I shouldn’t have been surprised because a lot of research DOES come from Israel (they have the time, space and resources because they’re not living their daily life just trying to survive….)
