Once again, Daisy is pulled into a murder mystery when her next-door neighbor is killed onstage. Unfortunately, as often happens in mystery stories, Bettina Westlea (her stage name; in real life Mrs. Roger Abernathy) has a lot of people that really don't like her. Her sister Muriel has always lived in her shadow and still acts as her housekeeper today. Her husband is a quiet man who knows of her many affairs but has suffered through them without a noise of complaint. Then there is the woman she beat out for a coveted role and the numerous scorned lovers. Really, it could be anyone.
We see Alec and Daisy's relationship grow in this book as well as they spend more time together. And it may be that Daisy's friend Lucy is even beginning to thaw in regards to the handsome inspector as well.

Daisy's neighbor Bettina is poisoned on stage while singing in Verdi's Requiem. Daisy & Alec are in the audience at the time.
Bettina was unfaithful, a diva & a spoiled brat who made her sister & husband's lives miserable as well as angering others aw well. So suspects abound.
Decent plot. Enjoyable read.

I really wanted something unchallenging and quick to read, while on a visit to my grandmother, and this seemed like the perfect choice. It's a reread, and the Daisy books all have a pretty familiar structure: Daisy meets people, decides on who she likes and dislikes, and then finds a dead body or witnesses a body, requiring Alec Fletcher to be called in.

The relationship between Alec and Daisy deepens over the course of the books, but here they're still tentative about their different social classes and the disapproval of their friends and families. It's cute, and I enjoy watching the development of their relationship like this, step by step. The supporting cast are also fun, like Ernie Piper, new to the uninformed branch and a big fan of Daisy, despite Alec's disapproval.

The mystery itself takes a while to get started, and has a massive red herring at the start... but it's a good twist, and the trope of Daisy stumbling over murders hasn't worn too thin yet by this point in the series!

3 1/2 stars. Nothing earth shattering. This is summer reading for me. Light, breezy, not too taxing of the brain during the hot weather. I will go on to #4 in the series.

I didn't find it as good as the first two but I do like the series so far.
