The vivid prose is dark and heavy, and made for a difficult and emotional read.  McCarthy's writing style worked really well for this book.

This is a five star book for me but I would not recommend it for everyone because of the content advisories as well as McCarthy's writing style.  If you are interested in checking him out, I would start with The Road.

Ok, what?!? This books starts out like the road, but instead of a post-apocalyptic setting, it seems more of a “Grapes of Wrath” type of book. A girl (forgot her name) has a baby. The baby is lost, she tries to find it. Meanwhile, the stupid brother (also forgot his name) is rambling around trying to find the the girl (his sister) for some reason, we never know exactly why. Why. Why? Why! There seems to be no direction, and the characters are terrible people.
Ok ok, so, turns out there was some incest and the child is the brothers. So brother leaves baby in woods. WHAT? Sister finds out, and thinks some tinkerer has the child, (which is true, but how would she KnOw?) then that ending. Hoo boy how strange. Some randos that the brother meets (all characters are separated and you get povs from them) have the child. HoW?? And then they procede to eat the child. WhY? It was like grapes of wrath until that moment when they kill the child. Now it’s a poorrly placed horror scene in an otherwise pretty flat book. The sister never fully has catharsis, because she does not seem to know what happened. I don’t even know what the H happened. Again… WHY?!?
There just seems to be no point to this book, it just rambles on and on and on. Writing was fine, but why would we follow such an interesting plot in such a boring way?
*Edit, (11/19/2022) this put me in a really bad reading slump, haven’t read a full book since.
