I honestly had no interest in reading this, but I kept hearing how great the audiobook was and my curiosity won out. I'm glad I listened to it, though. I was pleasantly surprised!

The way the story was put together was such a cool concept. I did struggle to identify the audiobook cast; there were a lot of characters to keep track of, and half of the narrator's voices sounded the same to me. I could only identity the female characters and Grahm by voice. I think that's just a me thing, though 😅 But it did unfortunately take me out of the story sometimes.

I also had a hard time believing that
Daisy and Billy loved each other. I understood the attraction, but felt like we were told more than we were shown. But maybe that was unavoidable since the bulk of the book was in interview format. While the interview format was cool and unique, it also made it harder for me to connect to the characters - they felt distant somehow.

Overall, it's a really good book. I think I'd enjoy it more on a reread.

This book kind of reminded me of the movie Almost Famous. So if you like that movie, you might like this.

I'd love to watch the adaptation of this, but I don't have Amazon Prime. Maybe one day I'll see it. 🤷‍♀️

Review from first re-read: I picked up this book as I had just finished watching the TV show and wanted to go back and compare it to the book. I was actually surprised by how many random little things were changed by the TV show and pretty much all for the better. I was surprised that
Rod is gay in the book which we definitely don't see in the show although we do see Simone having a much more complex queer love story... why could they both be gay?

I think because I have just watched the TV show and basically seen a polished version of the story where characters have more agency and the fatphobia (the way Teddy is discussed in the book is so gross!) has been removed, it was hard to enjoy this book as much as the first time that I read it. It is definitely a compelling story with lots of twists and turns but the flaws were a bit more obvious now.

Favourite quotes:

Men often think they deserve a sticker for treating women like people.

When you're in a situation like that, when you have a man looming over you, it's as if every decision you made to lead to that moment - alone with a man you don't trust - flashes before your eyes. Something tells me men don't do the same thing. When they are standing there, threatening a woman, I doubt they count every wrong step they made to become the asshole they are. But they should.

incredible character building and arc. dynamic, deep and strong women who are all distinct in their different lifestyles and identities. in depth view of addiction and the constant challenges it poses as one becomes sober. <spoilers> not quite on board with the infidelity/adultery. <spoilers> thoroughly enjoyed the other parts of this novel

This was such a unique and fascinating book, complexly told and ultimately engrossing. I'll admit, this book sucked me in by the end, these characters sucked me in. But I'm not sure it's one I'll think back to for years. I loved the different personalities of the band, specifically the "background" characters like Karen, Graham, Eddie, and Warren. Honestly, Billy and Daisy's story was somehow the least captivating? I'm glad I finally sat down and read this book, but I can't help but think about how much better The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is. I'd definitely be interested in listening to the audiobook, though!
