Enjoyed the narrative technique of the novel — characters recounting events in an interview, engaging in dialogue with the interviewer. 

I was impressed with how Jenkins Reid’s wrote her characters’ dialogue so conversationally. It was convincing and effortless. 

I liked the stark discrepancies and contradictions between characters when recounting events. They were all unreliable in that way and I like how the story leaves the truth unclear. 

I have a love/hate relationship with novels that are about music. It’s the same dissatisfaction I feel when watching cooking shows. You can describe it and show it to me all you want but it’s not in my mouth. 

I consumed this novel via audiobook and really loved that there was a full cast. It was like I was listening to a play on the radio. It was so emotive and artistically done. Arguably one of the best audiobook narrations I’ve heard. 

I found the ending of the band sudden. We all knew it was coming but yet I still found the way it was written anticlimactic and incomplete somehow, and not in a satisfying literary way.

I found the attempt at actually writing the band’s hit song “Honeycomb” and playing it at the end of the audiobook embarrassing??? You can’t write a novel and paint a picture about how extraordinary and talented and huge this band was and then expose my ears to whatever that was and expect me to say, yes, people definitely would have gone crazy over this song. It was cringey.

The hype for this book is real, especially with a series from a certain mega conglomerate out. But this is fantastic source material. I enjoyed Taylor Jenkins Reid’s other super hit, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, so much that I was excited to take another trip down memory lane in Hollywood with her. This did not disappoint. 

Jenkins Reid is remarkably talented at creating characters who feel raw and authentic, but ultimately motivated by good intentions. Her characters are flawed by vice - drugs, alcohol, hedonism, wanton sex - but you feel their humanity and you find yourself rooting for them. 

This narrative style, where the entire book reads as an extended interview with the band and the people that orbited it, may not be for everyone. I love character-driven novels, so this dialogue-heavy and anecdote-laden book really worked for me. I’d recommend it to anyone with an interest in rock and roll and its culture in the 70s, Fleetwood Mac enthusiasts, or anybody who wants a read with a lot of heart and occasionally, some real reflection on the things we do for family.

Daisy Jones & the Six is another great book by Taylor Jenkins Reid. If I were going to nitpick, I would say her style of an 11th hour child-related plot twist only really works the first time (and I read Evelyn Hugo before I got StoryGraph), but that is a minor thing. The ending also feels a little abrupt. But I love the level of detail, and the inclusion of the lyrics from the album in the back. I love the messy tension between Billy and Daisy. I love fictionalized versions of things we tend to use to share the truth, like a documentary or like an academic paper (House of Leaves ftw), and this obviously delivered in that realm. I wish I had listened to it as audiobook, but by the time I realized that was the best format, I wanted to read the book too much to wait for that version.

Very different from what I usually read, but definitely lived up to the hype. Highly recommend the full-cast audiobook.
