i enjoyed the latter half much better. i loved reading about the nanny and her one true love.

still i felt mom’s prose was flat. i was bored for most of the book.

i like the structure of the book,
going backwards in time

The backwards format made it feel more like a bunch of stories than a novel—I’m actually thinking of reading the chapters in reverse order to see if I am missing something, but I really enjoyed the characters (especially outside of the main family) and pictures she painted.

I have conflicting feelings on how to rate this one. I was taken with the story and the characters. I wanted to keep reading throughout, but at the end, I didn’t feel like the story was complete or I’d gotten something out of it.
It was interesting to see the layers peeled back on certain characters, their character development in reverse, and to have a chance to piece together their stories and who they are in that way. But I also wished there was more follow-up on other characters and plot points. The nature of this rewinding structure meant that some compelling dynamics and conflicts were simply undone and never came back into play. The framing of the narrative as a picture of the family as a whole also contributed to a feeling that I didn’t get to see as much as I would have like to of the inner workings of all the family members.

I’m not sure if i understood this book enough to properly review it. Based on the synopsis, it represents marriage, relationships, and time. By the plot going backwards in time, you could see how the relationships developed and what led to small changes in the future but i felt as it was random moments and could be confusing at times. I also didn’t get the chapters on the driver or the nanny and what impact they had to the story.
