probably my favorite book of IPB so far,
i love both farli and mardok so much and bringing in someone from outside the tribe is like a breath of fresh air because we get new slang / idioms, get to view not-hoth and the sa-khui from the pov of an outsider, introduce concepts like war and killing to farli, discuss the importance of resonance / choosing one’s own mate, and navigate the tension of the decision whether to stay or go (bc the humans never had a choice about whether they wanted to stay or leave.)
also ruby introduces a character with a new identity every book (independent, terminal illness, survivor of sexual assault, child sexual abuse survivor, fat, deaf, spouse caring for injured spouse / amnesia, grieving parents) and this book we got a character with ptsd. i am in awe of how ruby handles each of these characters with such care and love and continues to expand the series in an interesting and powerful way rather than copy pasting the same woman x sa-khui story. each of her characters grow and learn and that’s so beautiful and relatable.
