This was a wholly unnecessary sequel with an ending to this story that wrapped up just a bit to cleanly for my taste.

Please make sure to check the trigger warnings before considering this book.

It’s absolutely essential to read The Family Upstairs before picking this up. I wish I had read them back to back instead of over a year apart. There is very little recap but so many references to the first book, which is great if you remember all the details, which I definitely didn’t. I had to look up a “Coles Notes” synopsis and reviews of The Family Upstairs to refresh my memory. As a result, it took me a long time to get into this book.

I’m not sure a sequel was necessary for The Family Upstairs. Fleshing out Lucy’s POS ex-husband was so traumatic and sad (just adding additional victims to his tally), Henry is the most unlikeable and unsympathetic character ever (I actively rooted for his arrest and incarceration!), and Libby, who is not a major force in this book, seems like a damp rag willing to put herself at risk to protect the weird and freaky totally pointless lies maintained by people she’s known for a year.

I don’t regret reading this, but again, would highly recommend the two books back to back.

I came to the realization after finishing that ultimately this sequel doesn’t contain any big mysteries or twists; it’s a character study. Everything big was revealed in the first novel, and this deals with the aftermath of that trauma through the eyes of a few different characters.

I felt that Rachel’s plotline (which mostly took place in the past) was a bit of filler, but was really well done and I absolutely found myself cheering her on.

My stomach was in knots at points from needing to know what happened next! Very difficult to put down. I was very satisfied with the conclusion and it doesn’t end on a cliffhanger this time.

Content warning: rape (specifically spousal rape)
