Not as good as Wranglestone, and not quiet the ending I was expecting but it still made me cry

Wranglestone was a book about two boys falling in love and zombies. And granted it did have some moral messages about not killing people. But from what I remember it was, at heart, about Cooper & Peter being in love.

Now Timberdark, the sequel and a book about the same two boys having major relationship problems, falling out of love for a minute and fighting capitalism. Genuinely the last 40 pages or so were overtly anti-capitalism and anti-corporation. And you know what, I enjoyed this book more than I did Wranglestone. Not for the anti-capitalism message, but actually for reading about Peter & Cooper’s relationship problems. And also that ‘weird fever dream, what’s happening ever, where am I, what’s going on’ section in the middle. That was a great time.
I didn’t know this until now but reading about a relationship breaking down and falling apart is so fun. Reading from Peter’s perspective was so good because I just kept seeing myself in him.
When something bad happened and he was like ‘how do I get his attention again when no matter what happens to me he doesn’t care?’ That is so me! I still don’t like Peter though.
(Or any characters really)

Anyway why at the 3rd part did Cooper & Peter suddenly resolve their shitty relationship so easily? The resolution was rushed imo.
Also maybe I skimmed it but what was the deal with Deer Mask.

Unfortunately this books did not live up to the standards that Wranglestone set, with a big plot twist that was so eye-rolling that made me want to drop it.

The author went down a "we, humans and consumerism are the real enemy" and "real life is being close to the land" path full of cliches.

The allegorie became reality at some point, and I was not a fan of it.

The character development heavily relied on miscommunication due to keeping secrets which usually makes me side with the character who stays in the dark, aka Peter.

The relationship was still cute and I enjoyed the first part of the book, which had a really heartbreaking moment.
