Hum.
Hum.

this is called rape, Ms. Moning

MacKayla's story just gets better and better. I can't wait for the finale...no literally...KMM should give it to me now!

Definitely my favorite of the series despite some unnecessary parts (read: Dani's). It's just so dark and twisty--I have NO idea what is going to happen! Moning's writing bumped up several notches in this installment. It is no longer as frivolous and annoying (maybe because Mac has changed?). Her strongest work comes in the beginning where she describes Mac's return from being Pri-ya with Barrons. Mac's confusion, overwhelming sexual desires, and Barrons' niceness? are apparent.
I have so many questions that better be answered in Shadowfever (don't pull a Lost on me Moning!), so I'll list them here so I can attempt to keep track of them.
1. who is the fourth person during Mac's rape?
2. what happened to V'lane in the Forbidden Library wards?
3. who was beneath the vulture IYD creature?
4. what is the prophecy?
5. who really killed Alina?
6. what is Barrons? How can he kill Fae? Why is the Sinsah Dubh his "last chance"?
7. why is the Sinsah Dubh attracted to Mac?
8. how is Mac special, according to V'lane who said she did not begin to understand her abilities?
8.6 why did Mac acquire newly powerful abilities after overcoming her Pri-ya-ness?
9. what's up with dreamy-eyed Trinity ALD guy? (Cmon, Moning! he has been consistently..around...since book 1! there's gotta be something there)
10. do i like Barrons? is he working in Mac's self-interest? (I think I do, but he can be so unlikeable! but his work on turning Mac back from Pri-ya...god, I loved those chapters)
11. what's going on in all of Barrons' sad memories? whenever I read them, I feel like I'm reading a book version of Bane (aka evil Marion Cotillard)'s backstory in The Dark Knight Rises
12. what's up with Cruce? So we finally found out he cursed the Unseelie King's mirrors because he didn't want the king to see his concubine because he loved her too, right? I feel like he and the concubine are crucial to the denouement of this story somehow.
13. who is dream lady?
14. SO MANY MORE, mostly about Barrons Barrons Barrons, but I think I'll just go read Shadowfever instead because I can't hang off this cliff much longer! (I have such poor stamina, it's only been 15 minutes since finishing Dreamfever)

1. The Happy Dance
I'm going to do the happy dance now. Why? Because I'm happy. Duh.

This book was effing dark. Hands down. Real, creepy, uber dark. Just when you think things can't get worse. They do. I'm surprised by how well Moning has crafted this story. It's always on the spinning, toppling, spiraling mode. Never on a stand still mode.
2. The Congratulatory Episode

I've read about two hundred and odd books till now. I've come across some fantastic characters. Some are plain awesome, some are annoying, some never change and some are always surprising. You, Mac, were in the 'always surprising' category. Now, I'm just gonna remove you from there and put you in 'always kickass' category.
Four books in and Mac has grown and changed so much. I love this kind of character development and I simply have to congratulate Moning for this. Mac is one of the best characters I've ever come across.
If you told me all this while I was reading the first book, I would have laughed at you. I still cannot believe that this Mac is that Mac who stumbled upon Barrons Books and Baubles, all naive and feeling sorry for herself.
3. The Barrons Frustration

Four books. Four books, Barrons. Four mother effing books and I still ain't got shit on you. What is this sorcery? Why can't anyone crack him? Why is he always strong and mysterious? Why?!
There once was a man named Barrons
Who we all knew would one day crack
So we kept waiting and waiting
And waiting was all we did.
I was hoping to uncover everything or at least something about Barrons in Dreamfever and unfortunately, he still remains mysterious. It's so frustrating, you know. Every chapter Barrons is in, I keep waiting for him to spill his secrets or Mac to go find out more about him. And she finds nothing important and it tremendously frustrates her too! Imagine having to live with such a person. I would have probably gone mad, pulled all my hair out and would have drowned myself in frustration.
Why do you keep doing this to us, Barrons? WHY?
4. The 'Known' Fact

The 'Known' fact is that each and every one of the Fever books has to end in a cliffhanger. I think if the series had a life of its own, it would suck happily at how we flay in the end. Then it take would take a corporeal form and become the Sinsar Dubh to us. Okay, I'm just going crazy here. And I'm not going the whine and scream "WHHYYYYYYYY?!"

*screams* WTF?! Waking up this morning, I was excited to have about 20 more pages left to the book. *sigh* I counted wrong . . . I had 5. When I finished, I wasn't sure whether I wanted to throw the book or the author across the room. Holy cow, talk about a horrible way to end the book! I'm glad I only have to wait until this afternoon to get the last installment from the bookstore. Granted, I don't want to drop $26 with our mortgage payment coming due, but sheesh!!! Who the hell ends a book like that?!
After ending with Mac in the custody of the Unseelie princes and the Lord Master and being Pri-ya, I wasn't sure what to expect from this book. I knew that Barrons would end up coming in and saving the day, but I didn't see the spunky Dani being the savior! The more the book progresses, the more I adore that girl! I was pleasantly surprised that the first few chapters follow her. However, she is a little hard to follow ^_~
Honestly, the time spent between Barrons and Mac, in the beginning, was my favorite. The image of Barrons dancing naked to Tubthumping by The Offpsring was enough to make me laugh and feel a deep welling of emotion for the man.
"You're leaving me, Rainbow Girl." (56)
If it's possible, through those few chapters, I think I fell in love with Jericho Barrons. His actions towards Mac were simply and utterly a pure demonstration of love. It was beautiful.
I don't like what Mac went through, but in some ways I really am glad she has grown up even more. Some of her strategy with Rowena are childish, as well as some of the examples she sets for Dani. However, after talking with Kat and working with Dani, she seems to start growing up on a different level. Also, the fact that her ordeal has started to awaken something even more powerful in her is interesting. I honestly wish she had chosen to plunge the depths of her sidhe-seer place and see what was waiting for her.
All in all, this series has gotten progressively better. With each book, my opinion has been raised! I started out the series hating Jericho -- yes, he is still an ass, but with a heart -- and Mac, now I think they are starting to turn into well-rounded, deep characters. With the opening of the walls, Moning has expanded her writing style to encompass a rich landscape for the books, and I feel she has definitely risen to the challenge. From Darkfever to this book, it is obvious to me that her writing style has definitely matured. Good job, Karen!

I am really enjoying the evolution of the main character, Mac, even though the author keeps throwing me for loops that I'm unprepared for.
This ending is a cliffhanger that I DID NOT EXPECT, so thankfully these had all been published and I was binge reading on my NYPL app. It also did not resolve the way that I thought it would, and that is a breath of fresh air.
