Genuinely one of the worst books I’ve ever read in my life. Kept reading with hope it would get better but nope

I devoured this book. This is not for the faint of heart, however, if you are strong enough, it is a great read. Dare I say one of my top 5 this year.  Pam Godwin is a master at writing. The writing even elevates the smut. There are many triggers in this book (SA, graphic violence,… you name it.) I had to skip a paragraph or so that detailed SA. Nonetheless, I could not put this book down. I feel like I know the characters. I know I’m going to be in a reading slump after this.  I would recommend a thousand percent.

Pam Godwin's writing is undeniably beautiful, with its lyrical yet intense prose. The story's setting is both lush and gritty. Despite some gruesome scenes, I managed to push through, thanks to the author's skill in making them vividly come alive in my mind. However, here's the thing – I'm 203 pages in, and I'm not sure if I can keep going. The issue of dubious consent and humiliation rubbed me the wrong way, and it brought to mind a comparison with Black Jack from Outlander. Yeah, it's not quite like that, but the power dynamic does remind me of it.

I knew what I was getting into when I picked up this book, as I wanted to explore the dark romance genre. Unfortunately, I've come to realize that it might not be my cup of tea. While I don't have specific triggers, the overall premise of these stories isn't something I find myself enjoying.

So, I might have to put "Sea of Ruin" on pause for now and look for something more up my alley. If dark romance is your thing, though, you might still appreciate this book. But for me, it's time to sail toward other literary horizons! 📚⛵️

LOVED THIS. A little cliche, and comes with a long list of trigger warnings but by golly I wish I could be the pirate captain Bennett.
