jnordgren's review against another edition
Ann Rule desperately needed a better editor. It's really clear to me that her writing did anything but improve over time. I am fascinated by the stories, but can hardly tolerate the prose. She's also very presumptuous about peoples' feelings and emotions. I also get this sense that Rule had an inflexible view of gender roles. I hate the way she writes about relationships. It's uninspired and relies heavily on stereotyping. I think that gender and crime and policing have loads of interesting and horrifying effects on each other and Rule consistently misses crucial opportunities to identify and expound on these linkages. I really, really wanted to like Rule, but I just cannot.

Not Ann’s best work unfortunately. The articles were just a little too in depth, especially when it came to the trial sections. Felt like those went on forever, especially when she resorted to using bullet points so she could include EVERY SINGLE WITNESS AND WHAT THEY WERE USED FOR BY THE PROSECUTION.
Can’t win ‘em all, Ann.
