i'll have to revisit this story in its physical form because it was too confusing listening to it as audiobook.

This book certainly had potential, but I was left wanting. The style of writing is intentionally vague, and while that works in some cases to stimulate imagination to create suspense and terror, it was too vague and left me more confused than horrified--or even startled. I found it underwhelming, but perhaps that's because I have been desensitized after reading The Monk, lmfao. This book could have been so much more, delving even further into the darker aspects of human nature by not skipping over every single instance of horror and debauchery. Every time it's about to get juicy, the scene abruptly ends, and it moves to meaningless commentary and hearsay. Sad. I would like to read a modern retelling of this where a ballsy author takes this farther for modern readers to explore the madness of Pan. Pan is a god of duality, being a nature god of the wild. Nature is both nurturing and cruel, and the book could have explored more about the madness and cruelty of higher powers.

This book isn’t the best horror story but as a product of its time I feel like I should be lenient. Rather than “showing” you the horror like many modern horror stories, this story is mostly tell don’t show. However, I think this work well. It builds up anticipation and tenseness that many modern novels and stories don’t do for me. There were parts of the story that feels missing or unfinished but I believe it wraps up nicely towards the end.
