One of my new fave YAs. This book took place after The War™ happened and deals with the aftermath. So theres a lot of political intrigue and the effects that war has on The Child Chosen One™. But it was still pretty fast paced and so interesting. Never a dull moment. The bond between the two sister mc’s was peak. Captured perfect older sis mindset. Loved the dragons and the various queer rep. And the romances?! Like absolutelt perfect?! Just this right amount of slow burn, lovely little enemies to lovers, and no spice. I am a supporter of keeping spice out of YA. Save that for adult books pls. (No shame if that’s what you like reading but just a reminder that middle schoolers read YA and I started reading YA in elementary school. Just keeping age groups in mind…)
Anyways this was a masterful debut

2.5 stars, 1.5 rainbows.

This book had some serious pacing issues, had terrible action sequences, and seemed to almost skip around too much if that makes sense. It was a lot of telling instead of showing. For instance, we went to class once but were supposed to know that Elara has formed bonds with her classmates and professors to the point where they would betray their country for her?? Just wasn’t good but I really wanted it to be.

DN @36%. I was not enjoying it at all. I kept trying to push through it but it was boring me. Maybe I will try reading it again in the future, but right now it's not for me.

I enjoyed the majority of this book. The ending/twist villain was SO OBVIOUS it makes zero sense how anyone fell for them.
Especially Farran, I know she’s desperate but come on you’re introduced as being a good liar
I liked all of the characters individually but didn’t feel strongly about any of the romances. Some parts of the books dragged as well. But I still enjoyed myself and excited to read the second one.

✈️ Read this book if you want to travel to a world with dragons, world building and strong family bonds. ✈️

A strong debut novel that you will want to binge read. It has dragons, romance (without spice) and a dual point of view by fierce and endearing sisters.

While I wish the history of the world was a little more fleshed out I can see this happening later on and will be eagerly awaiting book 2 coming early 2025!

Favourite quote: “The story spilled from Faron like water through the cracks in a dam, trickling at first and then pouring out in an unstoppable deluge”
