I read this back in 2007 and again in 2023. Wow.

The writing was flat in a lot of places, but there were also really nice pieces about family. The book seems mostly like set up for the rest of the series, there were small story lines happening but the big finale was over so quickly and I honestly didn’t care about it.

Most of the characters are good. Roger and a bunch of others are a bit flat, but whatever. Granny Carne is easily the most interesting character and she feels more fleshed out than our whiny MC Sapphire who complains but never does anything.

I’ll read the rest of the series purely because I own them and am deciding whether or not I want them on my shelf. I’m really hoping the writing improves.

On the positive side, this clocks in at just over 300 pages with decent size text so it’s a fast read. The descriptions of the ocean is wonderful. Overall, it’s not a bad start to a series, but I certainly doesn’t make you want to dive into the next one.
