I liked this book, but the format was so disjointed. It was like reading blog posts. It’s a glimpse of the NYC that’s going away and I really wish it was a bit deeper.

Frickin excellent what a bloody great read. Amazing characters and stories and history.

Written short and choppy and would make a good bathroom reader.

ending was really good in like the last 4 pages, but the rest of the book was kinda funky in a way i wasn't expecting

Blew through this, which is unusual for me. It is enjoyable and light-hearted. Paints a picture, and makes highly judicious use of actual pictures (often with little commentary - as the picture of laundry hanging from the 1900s on the flip side of a page describing a threatening encounter with a new neighbour who insisted laundry was illegal to hang in the 'historical neighbourhood'). The author also uses blank space in a way that makes me think of prose poetry, for emphasis and to drive the story along. This is a piece about characters and a (long) period in time; don't expect too much depth, outside of Willy, or critique. I wish I had got to eat at The Store; though I'm not sure I would have made it as one of the good ones, I am sure I wouldn't have thrown Caesar salad all over the place!

Did someone force her to write a memoir? This was clearly written by someone who did not really want to do it. I did like the little glimpses of running the shop and live in NYC in the 80s, but... it's good that it's very short.
