Book eight of the Nancy Drew series finds Nancy receiving mysterious letters in the mail about an inheritance from someone she’s never met. She soon comes to find that not only is there another “Nancy Drew” but mail is being stolen around the area and poor family is desperately awaiting money from their father to help survive.
The mysterious letters have Nancy searching all over for not only the other Nancy Drew but a connection to the missing mail, and money. She meets the father who has been away working to help his family only to find out that he has no idea how much trouble they are really in.
I enjoyed this story and the connection between the two Nancy’s. It might be one of my favorites so far.

When reading a book like this, I try to remember the target audience, which, in this case, is 20 years younger than me. And a couple of generations before mine.
Despite the antiquated feel of the book, the suspense was surprisingly strong. Even though I thought to myself many times, This could never happen, I kept reading because I wanted to know how everything would work out in the end. Of course, with Nancy Drew, it really is "how" and not "if."
There were a lot of redundant passages that get in the way of the narrative and I wish the author had always followed the rule of "show, don't tell," but I enjoyed this nostalgic read. I wish young adult books were still written with this much innocence.

A real mail-order mystery, with a case of mistaken identity, fraud, and a lot of interesting characters... (Namely, the Sailor Skeeter and his wife... Man those two are nuts.)

This has been my least favorite of the ones I’ve reread. More danger, but absolutely no satisfaction with the ending. And a whole chapter if a football game. Did quarterbacks also punt and kick field goals in the 30s?

I love that ned plays every position on the football team. He really seems like he’d be a kicker though. Also Nancy is threaten like a million times in this book.
