I remember trying to read this when I was younger and being unable to finish it because of such a strong sense of secondhand embarrassment. I've finally went and finished it and I must say it's a cute little book.

Re reading books from my childhood had been really lovely and good for my heart+brain
Lots of the books I grew up loving had the similar theme of “normal kid gets whisked away to world with fantastical elements and saves the day” maybe that’s why I’m always looking for the secret door and portal around the corner

Rereading this book as an adult, I cannot overstate the influence it had on my worldview and sense of humor from reading it in my formative years.
