A powerful book. Two quotes that I like are:
"...we must allow each other our differences at the same time as we recognize our sameness."
And,
"I am not free while any woman is unfree, even when her shackles are very different from my own."
"...we must allow each other our differences at the same time as we recognize our sameness."
And,
"I am not free while any woman is unfree, even when her shackles are very different from my own."

This was my first Audre Lorde book and it was absolutely incredible. Kicking myself for not reading this earlier. This book feels like it should be on a required reading list. If you really want to educate yourself this book is a must read!

I have been working through the essays from this book for the past year and a half and I'll return to them again. One of my favorite quotes from Lorde: "If I didn't define myself for myself, I would be crunched into other people's fantasies for me and eaten alive." I recommend this book and her writing to everyone.

Audre Lorde’s Sister Outsider consists of a collection of her poems, essays, and speeches, discussing various points relating to sexuality, homophobia, gender, sexism, ethnicity, racism, politics, and colonisation. I recommend this book because a book written by a queer woman of colour, about being a queer woman of colour and the importance of intersectionality, is so important. It gives a voice to those who were not heard, especially not in the time this book was written. ‘I have lived with that anger, ignoring it, feeding upon it, learning to use it before it laid my visions to waste, for most of my life. Once I did it in silence, afraid of the weight. My fear of anger taught me nothing. Your fear of that anger will teach you nothing, also.’

I have been wanting to read this book for awhile and I found that this was the right time for me to read this. I cannot wait to get a hard copy and re-read her work. Her essays are thoughtful, and timely for anyone asking hard questions about life, and in some ways stand the test of time. Highly recommend this book to anyone!
