enjoyed the futuristic tone and setting. it was relatively easy to get into even though i’m not a video gamer. some of the sequences of the adventure were a little confusing but i was able to follow most of the plot!

While I understand that this book is highly acclaimed, that does not excuse it from being a poorly written piece of fiction. The dialogue and prose ruin what could have been a great story. The inclusion of blatant misogyny, racism, homophobia, and classism was not to "say something about society" but merely just some flavour to add to an already struggling story. The characters are so poorly written that I was never rooting for them and never felt the drive of their "heroes story." I guessed where the story was going within the first 100 pages and was disappointed at the lack of a twist. The middle of the story dragged on without any kind of plot or character development.
The references to the 80's were fun, but overdrawn. If this book was for a YA audience, the inclusion of misogyny, racism, homophobia, and classism with varied slurs and curses was distasteful. If this book was for those who have a passion for 80's pop culture, the descriptions were entirely unnecessary and pull the reader out of the world-building that was already questionable at best.
While you might find this book entertaining, I found it extremely difficult to get through. I thought that if I finished it, I would see what the fuss was about. I admit that I did not. This book is not for me and I found it dreadfully boring and poorly written. I will not be watching the film or reading any other publication by this author.

HOLY SHIT. Well gooddamm. So this is probably one of the best books I have ever read (well listened too but same difference). Wade Watts is a socially awkward poor 18 year old boy living in the year 2045. In this not so distant future, a immersive reality video game has taken over most of the planet. The Oasis was invented by James Haliday and Oggden Morrow. When Haliday died, his will revealed that he will leave all of his fortune and the entire Oasis game in the hands of the player who can find the egg he hid. Wade, and most of the Oasis population, has been searching for the first key for 5 years and when he accidentally stumbles upon the answer everything changes. This is a beautiful tale of love, friendship, perseverance, and ambition along with the message that reality is better than even the best recreations. I definitely thought this would be a boy book, based on the movie (which I have seen and can safely say this is almost nothing like it), but it pleasantly surprised me with how entertaining and emotionally deep Cline goes. This is a fantastic read/listen and I will be rereading this soon.

I wanted to like this book more than I did. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had more knowledge and/or excitement about video game history and 80s culture. It took a long time for anything to really happen; there was so much world building- which was necessary to understand this highly detailed world- but it felt like sometimes the plot stopped entirely in favor of a long explanation of the world and its history or a cultural reference. Sometimes time just suddenly jumped in a confusing way. The way Wade talked about women and gender was… uncomfortable. And strange. The book did make me think about the blurred lines between reality and technology, which is fascinating and frightening.

This book had a potential to be even better than it is by cutting out the half-assed romance storyline and building on the apocalyptic/social issues/eco crisis going on and working out how to actually deal with that rather than running away from it!
