Overall it was fine. Exactly what you’d expect. I’m knocking points off bc it’s not my style of book, but mostly bc of the handful of racist/homophobic/transphobic comments from the MCs. The situations where the comments were made were absolutely not called for to advance any plot or give any purpose to the story - they’re disgusting throwaway comments which… hmm wonder what that must say about the author

when i first started ready player one, i wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. the thing that threw me off most was how geeky and immature the narrator sounded, which i’m sure was done on purpose because the main character is a teen who games all day and has no other life outside of his vr world. while i didn’t really enjoy this type of narration style, i thought that cline made a phenomenal world with so many intricate details relating both to the past and the future. i wasn’t even born in the 80s but found myself feeling nostalgic and excited about all the movies, music, pop culture, and media from that time. i also really loved the concept of humanity choosing to live in VR and ignore what is going on irl, since i feel like we are slowly straying towards that path today.. i think this book will be enjoyed by anyone who holds respect and love for gaming and tech in general. 4/5 stars!

To me, one of the biggest appeals of this book is the world it creates. It intertwines old video games and futuristic technology in a compelling way. If you're a fan of references to 80s pop culture and classic video games, you'll probably like this book.

A few parts in the middle felt like they were rushed over to maintain the story's momentum, but other than that the pacing is pretty good.
The ending wrapped the story up nicely. It might be a bit too clean for some, but I still enjoyed it.
Overall, I liked the story and loved the world it's set in.

DNF @ 45%. I am a super video game nerd, so I’ve had this book on my list for a while. While it is not classified as being Young Adult, it was too YA-ish for me. I simply could not get into the writing style and I had no interest in our main character at all.

“Overall, she seemed to be going for a sort of mid-’80s postapocalyptic cyberpunk girl-next-door look. And it was working for me, in a big way. In a word: hot.” A grown man wrote this? EWWWWWW. 😵‍💫

It’s a no from me, dog.

A really enjoyable read. I love the nostalgia this book brings. It’s very intense and you can’t stop reading it. I would say I’m not a fan of how the female characters are written and the book tends to tell you the plot rather than leave you to figure it out. There are parts that are also quite sudden. I’d still recommend.
