The references to the 80's were fun, but overdrawn. If this book was for a YA audience, the inclusion of misogyny, racism, homophobia, and classism with varied slurs and curses was distasteful. If this book was for those who have a passion for 80's pop culture, the descriptions were entirely unnecessary and pull the reader out of the world-building that was already questionable at best.
While you might find this book entertaining, I found it extremely difficult to get through. I thought that if I finished it, I would see what the fuss was about. I admit that I did not. This book is not for me and I found it dreadfully boring and poorly written. I will not be watching the film or reading any other publication by this author.
