i hated this book. i think it sucked and it was painful to finish for book club.

I might have rated this 4 stars because I do think the world is cool, but the teen boy of it all gets to be a bit much, especially by the end of the book. At first I thought the main character was just an accurate portrayal of teen boyness, warts and all, but it becomes obvious as the book goes on that Wade can do no wrong (and actually those aren’t warts at all!) once he’s learned the Moral of the Story. Cline also really hits you over the head with said moral. And let’s not forget the clumsy exposition that continues throughout the novel. I can tolerate that at the beginning of a book, but the entire thing?? Also “rubenesque”. More than once. Kill me.

Kind of a bummer, because I think this book had a lot of potential. I still liked it though, and I’ll probably check out the sequel. I can definitely see why this was adapted into a movie and I’ll be checking that out too.

If there was a church dedicated
to all things 80s Fandom, this would be the Bible and the nerds and geeks would be patron saints. This book, while a slow starter in my opinion, picks up steam to become quite an engaging adventure. Will Wheaton does an excellent and skillful job as narrator, which added to the experience. Some may find this story to be a bit tedious and laden with references, but if you can put that aside then you're in for a treat.

Also why would you not just like post how to get through the later gates as soon as you get through like? Even if other gunters get to them and the beat you later, like that is still more people to compete against the sixers? So,, stupid

Also i know it was kinda on purpose but the challenges were so anticlimactic hahaha no winder they changed them all in the film.
Dude wade was so annoying, like until he mopes about doing - literally nothing- he just like perfectly goes through everything, dude its no fun watching the mc breeze through all of lifes challenges, woulda been so much better from art3mis’ perspective
